The City of Long Beach received a grant from the California State Coastal Conservancy to fund a feasibility study for wetland restorations at the southern end of DeForest Park and the Sixth Street Bridge. The study will consider the feasibility of developing a wetlands habitat and improving the water quality at the DeForest Park and Sixth Street Bridge sites. The DeForest Park site, approximately 20-acres in area, is adjacent to a 250-foot wide side channel, which is currently operated by Los Angeles County Public Works as a flood retention basin. The Sixth Street Bridge site is an approximate 4-acre property with a pump station that delivers storm water from City streets to the Los Angeles River. The study will identify the feasibility of restoring both sites to wetland habitats and consider using the wetlands to filter the water for possible open space irrigation. The study will also identify opportunities for recreational features, trails, nearby open space and natural areas, and an interpretive center location. Funding will be required for the implementation of the study recommendations.
