Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Question:
I am inquiring to see if a topo/survey and soil report is needed for our proposed project at 260 E. Pentagon Street, Altadena. The site has a small slope. We are proposing a 300 sf addition to the back of the house with a basement below the new addition, and a new ADU in the back of the property. I can send a plan if needed to review.

Answer:
Ms. Becker,
We (Geotechnical and Materials Engineering Division - GMED) checked with Jennifer at the Building and Safety office in San Gabriel Valley. She stated Building and Safety (B&S) currently did not see any building submittal under the subject address but, yes, they would refer the project to GMED for review of the basement wall.

GMED will require a soils report to address seismic loading for retaining walls (as part of the basement) exceeding 6 feet in height. In addition, we reviewed various documents and it appears the property is not located within the Sierra Madre fault zone. Therefore, based on the information provided, a fault investigation would not be required for the proposed addition and ADU.
