Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Question:
Does a 2 story ADU require a liquefaction evaluation (50ft boring etc) it is not defined as a "project" per the state guidelines but the county guidelines (excerpt below) are confusing to me. Project address 1908 Kinneloa Canyon Rd,
Pasadena, CA 91107

Manual for Preparation of Geotechnical Reports July 2013 (Revised)
Page 80 "Liquefaction analysis is required for developments classified as a Project as
defined in the Seismic Hazards Mapping Act and is located within a mapped
potentially liquefiable area per the State of California Seismic Hazard Zone Maps.
Liquefaction analysis may also be required for a development that is not classified
as a Project, but it is located in areas designated as potentially liquefiable and
liquefiable on the Countys Seismic Element Map."

Answer:
Liquefaction analysis is not required for a 2-story ADU per current guidelines and State requirements. We are not using the liquefaction map from the Safety Element/General Plan as a reference any longer, and the manual needs to be updated to reflect this.
